As promised...today we are talking about DIET SODA.
Diet soda was originally created and advertised as a pop safe for diabetics to drink, and over the years it's become an "in" drink for those trying to maintain/lose weight as well. But the numbers are showing it's not good for healthy weight loss OR diabetics.
Harvard conducted an 11-year study following women drinking diet soda. Those who drank diet soda compared to regular soda saw a two-fold increase in incidence of kidney function decline. Researchers did not see this in those who drank regular soda, so they have theorized the ingredients in diet soda are causing the decline. And again, like the studies we read about yesterday regarding regular soda, those who drank diet soda still experienced increased rates of metabolic syndrome (diabetes) and weight gain despite drinking a zero sugar, zero calorie drink (this could be due to lifestyle).
The jury is still out on the negative effects of aspartame and other artificial sweeteners. Studies on humans have been inconclusive, but rat studies show tremendous risk increase for tumors and cancer.
On a final note, studies have found that drinking diet soda will impact your gut bacteria. Your gut bacteria helps determine your metabolism (among many other things), and it was found that of those who consume diet soda, not only did their gut bacteria change dramatically, but they also developed glucose intolerance which was reversible after stopping diet soda.
Just some tidbits to nibble on today. Are you diet soda fans? After reading today's post, are you inspired to do some more research on your own about the effects of diet soda?
